Harbin's ice and snow season usually runs from late December to February, when the city fills with giant ice sculptures. For many travellers from Southeast Asia and the Gulf, it is the first time they will see snow.
Why plan now
- Flights and hotels during the season, and around Chinese New Year, sell out early.
- Exact opening dates for the ice festival are announced each year, so book flexible rates where you can.
What to prepare
- Clothing for well below –20°C: thermal layers, a down jacket, insulated boots, gloves and a hat. You can also rent some items locally.
- Short outdoor sessions with heated transport in between.
- Halal meals planned in advance in northeast China.
