Getting around China: high-speed trains, flights, metro and taxis

China's transport is fast, cheap and well signposted. The main things to know are that tickets are linked to your passport and that your phone does most of the work.

The short answer

  • Train tickets are linked to your passport. Book on Railway 12306 or Trip.com and show the passport at the gate.
  • Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early at large stations for security and passport checks.
  • Most city metros accept the Alipay transit QR code.
  • Order taxis through DiDi or inside Alipay and show the driver the address in Chinese.

High-speed trains

China has the world's largest high-speed rail network. Book on the Railway 12306 app or website, which accepts foreign passports, or on Trip.com. Your passport is your ticket: scan or show it at the gate. Large stations have airport-style security, so leave time.

Metro

Every major city has a metro with signs and announcements in English. Scan the Alipay transit QR code at the gates, or buy a single ticket at the machines.

Taxis and ride-hailing

DiDi is China's main ride-hailing app and works in English with foreign cards. You can also order a car inside Alipay. Save your hotel address in Chinese on your phone.

Flights

Domestic flights are frequent and competitively priced. Allow time for security, which is thorough, and carry power banks in your hand luggage only, following the airline's rules.

Private car and driver

For factory visits, rural areas and families with luggage, a private car with driver is the most comfortable option. We can arrange one for a transfer or a full day.

Questions

Can foreigners book high-speed trains in China?

Yes. Book on the Railway 12306 app or website or on Trip.com using your passport. The ticket is linked to your passport, which you show at the station.

Is it better to fly or take the train in China?

For journeys up to about five hours, high-speed trains are usually faster door to door, because stations are central and boarding is quick. For longer distances, fly.

Can I use taxis without speaking Chinese?

Yes. Ride-hailing apps such as DiDi have English interfaces and let you type or paste the destination in Chinese.
