The word to know: 清真

Halal restaurants in China display 清真 (qīngzhēn). Many are run by the Hui, Uyghur or other Muslim communities, and some show Arabic script as well. Save the characters on your phone.

Easy halal food everywhere

  • Lanzhou beef noodles: hand-pulled noodles in beef broth, in almost every city.

Where to plan ahead

In Sichuan, Hunan and many southern regions, pork and lard are common and halal restaurants are fewer. Plan meals in advance or ask hotels to prepare halal meals.
