Etiquette in China: culture tips for travellers and business visitors

The short answer

  • Tipping is not expected in most restaurants and taxis.
  • Give and receive business cards with both hands.
  • At dinners, the host orders and pays; seating follows seniority.
  • Avoid clocks as gifts and the number 4, which sounds like "death".

Business meetings

  • Bring plenty of business cards, ideally with Chinese on one side.
  • Give and receive cards with both hands and read them before putting them away.
  • Relationships matter. Expect meals and small talk before detailed negotiation.
  • Decisions often take time and involve people not in the room.

Dining

  • The host usually orders for the table and pays.
  • Dishes are shared. Use serving chopsticks if provided.
  • Don't stick chopsticks upright in rice.
  • You can toast with tea or a soft drink.

Gifts

  • Good gifts: quality items from your country, such as food specialities or crafts.
  • Avoid clocks, sharp objects and sets of four.
  • Gifts may be politely refused at first before being accepted.

Everyday tips

  • Queues can be informal; stay patient.
  • Keep voices calm in disagreements. Losing face publicly damages relationships.
  • Photography is restricted in some government and military areas.

Questions

Should I tip in China?

Generally no. Tipping is not expected in restaurants or taxis. Guides and drivers on private tours may appreciate a tip.

How do business meetings work in China?

Arrive on time, exchange business cards with both hands, let the senior person lead, and expect relationship-building over meals before details are agreed.

Can I decline alcohol at a business dinner?

Yes. Toasting is common, but you can toast with tea or a soft drink. Explaining that you do not drink for religious or health reasons is respected.
